What is the Definition of Life

How Does the Bible Define Life?

Right from the beginning we are told that God breathed life into man, The first man was formed from dust of the earth. I get a picture of a clay statue that God has worked on to create a man in his image. Then he breathes into it life. So even better than Frosty the Snowman, God creates man. He is a living being, designed by God who has created for him a whole world. He gives him a purpose, a job to do. He is to observe, play with, study the animals and name them. Personally, I think that sounds like a good life. But Adam needs a mate and so God once again goes back to the clay and creates a woman for his companion. He designs her with the ability to reproduce, with Adams help of course, and are now fearfully and wonderfully made in the womb.

God placed the Tree of Life in the center of the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were banished from the garden after eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, against God's wishes. God did not want them to eat of the Tree of Life in this fallen condition. Those who enter into heaven will then be able to eat of the Tree of Life. This will enable their new bodies to live forever.

We are told to love God who is our life. Without God we wouldn't have life. Not this mortal fleshly life or eternal life. Have you ever told someone, "Don't forget me?" What if God stopped thinking about me. I don't want to stop thinking about Him.

The life is in the blood. Jesus shed his blood to make sacrifice of his perfect life to pay the penalty for the sins of all who will accept His gift. Blood is powerful. We are completely dependant upon it for our life. Without blood in our veins we die. Without the blood of Jesus to pay our debt to God, we will be separated from God forever, the second death.

One disciple spoke to Jesus wanting to follow him but first wanted to bury his family. Now, his family wasn't laying there dead. He wanted to wait until they grew old and died and then leave and follow Jesus. But Jesus told him to let the dead bury the dead. So what would that mean?

If we do not understand that these bodies we live in are mortal and our souls are immortal this could be confusing. We don't seem to have different words to discribe the life of our human bodies and our spiritual souls. The second death is the separation from God or banishment from heaven; that is what is more of a problem for us than the first death of our mortal bodies.

Thinking about it like this then, when Jesus says to let the dead bury the dead, He must firstly have been letting him know that they would die in the second death. Secondly, make sure you follow Me so you wont die as well.

So the next question is the meaning or purpose of life....now, in these bodies, on this Earth. Why are we here? What purpose has God put us here until the day these bodies give out on us and we then are face to face with God. Then we will find out what eternal life is about. But how we live now will greatly affect how we live eternally.
